What's actually in Victorian tap water? A plain-English explainer

Let's start with the headline: Victorian tap water is safe to drink. Melbourne's supply comes largely from protected forested catchments, and it's treated and monitored to strict standards. So this isn't a scare piece — it's a "what am I actually tasting" piece.

Chlorine — the taste and smell culprit

Chlorine is added to keep water safe as it travels through hundreds of kilometres of pipes to your tap. It does that job well. The trade-off is the swimming-pool smell some people notice, especially first thing in the morning when water's been sitting in your pipes.
